Growin’ A Beard

Growin’ A Beard

Now you are in for a treat. This film has had quite a life. First it premiered at SXSW, then it was picked up and distributed by Aspyr Media and then it inspired a whole host of well-folicled men across the… More country. Hopeful beard growers have traveled to Shamrock to compete and other have started Donegal Beard Contests some of which are still active today. The best by far is the St. Arnold Brewery in Houston who still hosts a beard contest every year. In fact it's quite possible to trace the entire beard renaissance back to this little gem. Here's the story: Growin' A Beard follows the men of Shamrock, Texas as they compete in the Donegal Beard Growing Contest - a hirsute competition that dates back to 1938. The rules are simple - who can grow the best Donegal beard from New Years Day to St. Patrick's Day. But the year we filmed we brought in a hairy outsider. The results are now a part of history. Original soundtrack by The Gourds.

Now finally available for free on the internet!
The 72oz Steak

The 72oz Steak

The 72oz Steak challenge is real. It exists at the Big Texan Steak Ranch outside of Amarillo. And our buddy George was up for the challenge. Not sure what's more impressive: Dale Watson writing a song for this short called Gotta… More Eat, or the fact that the film has over 150,000 plays on YouTube. Something’s Brewin’ in Shiner

Something’s Brewin’ in Shiner

Hard to believe this film is 10 years old. It was a different time back then. John Huebner was still the head brewer, Shiner hadn't release a new style of beer in over 20 years and gas was under $1.56 a gallon!!!! It's hard… More work making film with a small crew and tiny budget. We spent the mornings with the Old Geezers at Maeker's bar. Then filmed at the brewery and tasting room. We ended these arduous days at Howard's - the greatest convenience store in Texas because he's got taps coming right out of the wall. Shiner has become a much bigger brand now so it's nice to turn back the clock and be able to see them taking their first steps towards bigger things. /> And this would mark the second time we would use The Gourds to make a soundtrack. But they did much more than score music to our picture - we actually cut the picture to their songs. Particularly "What's it gonna be beer." And it ends with an absolute scorcher: "If it ain't Shiner, it ain't mine."
The Tuesday Nighter

The Tuesday Nighter

One of the main reasons we are drawn to making documentaries is because they capture moments in time. Forever. The Tuesday Nighter is an excellent example. This little ride is about a pirate bike race that started over 20 years ago. It's… More informal, no officials, only unspoken rules guide the cyclists as they compete as hard as if it was the Nationals. In fact, Lance Armstrong used this race as his personal test track as he came back from cancer.

Oh how things change. The race course has been overtaken by subdivisions and Lance, well, you know that story. />
Enjoy this little time

Oh and we should note the killer score by Scott H Biram.
Life is Marbelous

Life is Marbelous

"Is there anything more beautifully simple than a marble?" is the question The Marble Lady asks. After watching this short you'll be hard pressed to find a contrary answer. Take 22 minutes out of your hectic life and come enter a world… More that is only possible through documentaries. You'll visit The Marble Lady's million marble collection. She'll take you to the "Super Bowl" of marble tournaments on the Kentucky/Tennessee state line. Then you'll see her - and a small town in Maryland - try and break the world record for most people playing marbles at the same time.

Along the way you'll be serenaded by an amazing original soundtrack. Elizabeth McQueen, Dale Watson, Andrea Perry and (of course) Kevin Russell have all written songs about marbles.

You'll be hard pressed to find anyone who puts more talent into their obscure short docs. The proof? This marble game app we created for the film: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/life-is-marbleous/id472023103?mt=8
