Beef and Pie

Benny is a character. He’s trying to race in the Super Bowl of NASCAR i.e. the Daytona 500 – but he’s currently driving in the minors. Oh, and he’s 67 years old.  Will he do it?  Tag along and let’s see how he does together.  Already we’ve been following him for months and we will be there in February when the big decision comes down.

This the kind of project we love. 1) It’s a story about a real person trying to accomplish big things.  2) We’re working with two of our favorite creatives and 3) the subject matter has taken us to some seriously spooky small towns.

The first day you meet your documentary subject is always a challenge.  You’ve got all these hopes and dreams for the project but haven’t even put him on camera yet. We found Benny to be great on camera.

But something strange was happening in the background.

More and more people kept showing up. We asked Benny to have some friends and family show up for quick interviews about him. Well he invited everyone – and we do me everyone. Like his barber, his lawyer, the woman who upholsters his chairs, his buddy the DJ, a guy who works at the auto paint store….
