The Making Of

Farm Bureau Insurance  /  Farmer Charlie  /  Melons

This was an idea we heard the creative kicking around a year or two ago. We kept pushing to shoot it because it was so clean and clever without a lick of dialogue. The only issue was the morning we shot it a huge storm blew through Nashville.  Not sure how Andrew made this look that good but there is a raging storm outside of this farmer’s market.

We put Karen in the background of a lot of commercials, but this one we put her front and center.

Pride. That’s why we feel every time we watch this spot.  This was one of those scripts that just killed in presentation – but how often do you lose something once it hits the big screen? This one just came together perfectly. The cast is just killer.  That kid was amazing.  The dad never broke character and Farmer Charlie got on an ad-lib role that made the spot magic.

Thanks to everyone including the waitress at the diner who kept making everyone on the crew old-school milkshakes between takes.

Fix it in pre.  Oh my god did we prep this one.  We were worried about the horse, the boat, the time it would take to get it all in :30.  But it paid off.  It just shows how far Farmer Charlie will go to take care of his people and how far we can all go to stretch a campaign concept.

It’s never a good idea to put Andrew and Charlie in a boat with a huge camera. But after Charlie kept the Red from falling in the lake they got some killer footage.
Please don’t slip on the rocks.

Last year the Air Force launched their new campaign – It’s Not Science Fiction. It’s the Air Force. These are very fancy TV spots that show just how hi-tech the Air Force is in many different fields.  They wanted to create a microsite that was the opposite of Science Fiction – they wanted to show the real people who operate satellites, fly Reaper airplanes and land behind enemy lines to save wounded soldiers.

Mega-who? It’s Mega Watt.  Check out the “Digs” of CFL Records’ supa-star rapper Mega Watt.

After a year of shooting Home Turf episodes with Deion Sanders it was a natural for Beef and Pie to spend a day filming Mega’s mansion. When we weren’t looking longingly at the acre sized pool, hot tub or theater room, we learned a little bit about energy consumption. Visit Mega Watt’s Reliant Energy Page for more info.

Do you have any idea how hot it was? This was shot in the middle of summer in steamy hot Tennessee. In a fertilizer barn with the doors shut.  It was approximately 1000 degrees give or take a level of hell.  It was a bit complicated since we knew we were going to add the Titans game in post.  Plus we were sticking the camera in a bunch of awkward places around that big tractor.  (UBANGI!) Not only did it come together but it feels awesome.  Charlie’s performance is great mainly because of the excellent direction he gets or the 6 Starbucks Doubleshots he had.

We woke up really early for this one to get the dawn-for-dusk sky. It was real purty.

This was originally scripted as a squirrel that runs out and takes the ball away.  Turns out we didn’t have the time – and squirrels don’t have the brain size – to train one.  Karen, got inspired and contacted our animal trainer friends in rural Texas. They offered up a cougar.  Not just any cougar but the one that was in Talladega Nights!  They started training the cougar to walk in, pick up a golf ball and walk off.  (used a lot of raw meat I heard). Anyway, the agency decided that a hawk would be funnier.  We shrugged our shoulders and said, okay, we’ll train a hawk.  This one “flew” in from LA.  First class no less.  Nailed it on the first take.  Much smarter than a squirrel.  But we’ll always have a whole in our comedy hearts where that cougar could have been.

Combat Controllers are one of the Special Forces of the Air Force. Their main mission is to get behind enemy lines and be able to call in targeted air strikes from the ground.

Stuff that didn’t make the cut:

As he’s showing us his equipment he out his curved Ghurkha knife. Someone says, “It’s filthy, what’s on there?” “Blood.” he replies.

On his last mission to an undisclosed location he was “inserted” behind enemy lines via a torpedo chamber on a nuclear sub.

Favorite move in a bar fight?  The Head-Butt.

PJ’s.  Para Jumpers. Sounds a bit banal considering what these people do.  These are the Special Operation folks that go wherever an injured person is and get them out.

Para Jumpers are the ones standing by at Space Shuttle launches in case the mission is aborted during launch and the astronauts are jettisoned into the ocean.

These guys’ lockers are like a well-stocked section of REI: Climbing ropes, carabiners, ice-axes, underwater gear. You really get the idea that they can do anything, go anywhere.

Para Jumpers are part of the Air Force’s Special Operations force. They are on the same level as Navy Seals – except PJ’s are also doctors.  These are the guys who rescue you if your helicopter gets shot down.

There was a lot of talk about PJ’s vs. Nave Seals. We kept trying to arrange some kind of Thunderdome square off.  But nobody listens to us…. then again, why would you? We can’t Halo Jump onto a film set and stop a sucking chest wound.

This was an awesome spot to make.  We got to shoot in the Driskell, The Paramount Theater and an emergency room.  It’s also got cameos galore – the Usher was just off the set of the Coen’s No Country for Old Men.  Our PA Lindsey was the dying patient. Beefy’s cousin and art department lackey was a nurse and yes, that is Poppa Beef – Howard Woolf – trying to not look at the camera behind Farmer Charlie. And stupid me missed Karen in the Opera Box.

What a blast.  We’re having a wedding!!  We got to pick the guestlist (70 Austin extras – most of which showed up bathed), the bride (Amber – one of our all time favorites) the caterer (2dine4 – okay they are often our caterer) and the church was right off of I35.

For years we’ve been shooting with The Tombras Group – and for years our spots have been edited by Brent Farwick from Karma.  For this 7 spot campaign that we shot in Austin we flew Brent in so he could help with continuity and drink a lot of Shiner. There’s no question the spots get better when the editor is part of the process and not just handed the footage.  Thanks Brent.

This felt great: a whole bunch of extras, we hazed up the air, Amber and Attica were awesome, what a blast to shoot!

This was the day that almost did us in.  Andrew on steadycam, Mike in the bush with the “insurgents” Wilson on timelapse, handheld, steadycam who know what he was doing, Schwartz (Candy) had the RED going all day and a lipstick cam kept getting taped to people.  I guess it all worked out.  All I remember was at about 3pm finishing an interview with an Airman where the sweat was just rolling off his face like a hose. I turned around and looked at our crew, just ghosts of humans, blank eyes, couldn’t even take the effort to sweat anymore.  No one even perked up at “icy cold Starbucks Doubleshot.” It was a wrap.

The purpose of this microsite was to give prospective Air Force recruits a totally realistic picture of what Basic Training was going to be like. The idea was that for those who entered the Air Force the would come better prepared physically and mentally.  Just as importantly it was to prevent drop outs during BMT because they didn’t know what they were getting themselves into.  For every week we filmed overviews highlighting the exciting and scary plus had a  Sergeant narrate the milestones and expectations for each week.

Legacy Heart Care  /  Heartbeat beat  /  Mow The Lawn!?

If you know anyone with serious heart disease they should really look into EECP.  This is the real deal.  We’re not doctors – just advertising people who think we know everything.  And this is making a difference in people’s lives.  Basically it is a non-invasive heart therapy. For seven weeks, one hour a day, your heart is “pumped for you” using huge compression socks on your legs.  Basically it exercises the heart without putting stress on it. This give the heart a chance to grow capillaries around the diseased areas.  The results have been impressive.

Michael Gratch is the man behind Legacy Heart Care and it was a great experience working directly with him to make this campaign. We felt good about helping spread the word about such a revolutionary heart therapy – and we felt a little less guilty about going into advertising vs. med school way back when….

This ad is all Mike Coffin.  He had the vision.  Get some killer black and white shots of the down and dirty men who work the heavy equipment – and put it to the Merle Haggard song Working Man Blues. We couldn’t afford the actual song so we asked Austin legend Dale Watson to cut a version.  Of course it’s perfect.  Whats more Redd Volkart (Merle’s lead guitarist for decades) played the track with Dale and gave us this little tidbit.  That random “hit” was a drumstick hitting a coke bottle.

Real men in West Texas.
Real. Men.

Ahhh the stuff of legend.  So many memories.  The goats pooping in aisle 3. The longhorn taking out a lightbulb display with his 7 foot horns right before it peed and pooped on the floor.  The health inspector arriving 5 minutes after we finished cleaning up.  The discussions with how to get a fake monkey paw to pick up a banana.  And then the shear fear we had of working with Whiplash.  ”Don’t look him in the eyes,” “bananas make him angry,” “you’ve probably got 20 minutes before he starts pulling his clothes off.”

This was a nightshoot so it was totally surreal.  You’d be walking past aisles and see rodeo clowns, pigs and goats eating out of the lettuce display.

For this round of Farmer Charlie spots there was a huge cast – at least 30 principles for five spots.  For this specific commercial we’d cast a large group of extras to chase Charlie around the McCoy’s Hardware Store. We just figured two or three of them could deliver the line “Charlie’s here?” How hard could that be?  Wellllllll, turns out it was nearly impossible. Two people utterly failed and we were getting nervous. There was an actor trying to pull out a plank of wood and deliver the line. It was so bad Andrew snapped.  He told the guy to just get out of frame and said, “Beefy just go in there and do it.”  Nailed it on the first take.

Which, a year later, led to a very random phone call from a friend of Mike’s in the Nashville airport – drunk.  He’s watching TV at the airport bar and SWEARS he sees him in an insurance commercial.

A year back the US Air Force become a sponsor of the #43 Nascar. But they didn’t just want to put their logo on a car – so they created a campaign where the two would switch seats.  So the driver an Air For ce pilot would get behnid the wheel of the #43 car and Reed Sorenson would fly an F16.  That was cool but it went much deeper than that. Nascar pit crews would swap seats with the airmen on the flight line. So the dude who changes tires in the race pits would get to see what it takes to change a tire on a fighter jet.  And vice versa.  We filmed everything from the F-16 flight line to the heart of Nascar in Charlotte, NC.

This was very very docu-style.  Very fly on the wall.  We followed the action and let it unfold.  Very few set-up interviews. It was a blast to make on and off camera.  Some off camera highlights: Toasting Mr. Bones with Jeremiah Weed / the impromptu (and very dangerous) ride around the race track in Reed’s rental car / the Down The Hatch bar across the highway from the hotel.

Yep, the Air Force sure picked a good looking guy to be our subject, with a cool name to boot. “Dollar” was a lot of fun to work with, kind of like Tom Cruise in Top Gun, but about a foot taller (and he really can fly).

It’s fun to fire a puppet.

We talked about CGI-ing his mouth but we thought that would lose some of the ridiculousness of this bobblehead in a real situation. Of course it made bobbing the head a pain in the ass. This also stars one of our favorite actors, Jennifer.  This was one of the only times she played both the English and Spanish lead.  Go Jennifer!

We figured we’d got one a few days old or a few weeks.  We just knew we w0uldn’t go the animatronic route.  Or put a toddler in there and hope people thought it was a baby.  Karen worked with the hospital, found a new mom, induced her the night before the shoot, delivered it and brought it to set.  Karen goes the extra mile!!!

Animating an eye chart was an ad idea kicking around in his head for years.  But it was Christian Helms’ design and Brandon Thomas’ animation that made that glimmer in his eye a reality.

But something strange was happening in the background.

More and more people kept showing up. We asked Benny to have some friends and family show up for quick interviews about him. Well he invited everyone – and we do me everyone. Like his barber, his lawyer, the woman who upholsters his chairs, his buddy the DJ, a guy who works at the auto paint store….

At one point there were 6 people in the garage waiting to be interviewed and I asked how they knew each other. Knew each other?!?!  None of them had ever met.

LT was one of the most professional, friendly and confident athletes we worked with. Not like Andy Roddick.  He had a scary pitbull named “Sweetness” of course.

These shoots are so fast and furious – 6 hours with the stars, 4 AT&T products and a whole house to shoot – so it’s hard to give Deion and the star the time to sit, chat and create moments that aren’t scripted.  Especially since Prime’s typical reaction after we said cut was “that was a great one! Let’s move on!” That said I remember the conversation these two had in LT’s secret room were some of the most natural of the entire series.

We also got to film the airmen being “drownproofed.” Oh yes.  This is where they bind the airmen’s hands and legs and they have to swim laps and tread water.  Andrew was so excited about our underwater helmet cam he jumped in with them and started filming.  He cracked a rib on the way out.

This was challenging.  We have to film these kids who are learning languages. We can’t show what they are working on on their computer screens.  They can’t talk about what they do with their language skills since it is classified. There isn’t much to film visually since they just listen on headphones and type on their computers.  I think Andrew did a killer job making some boring classrooms look high-tech. Beefy here.  I distinctly remember meeting Albert as he stepped out of his bedroom with the entire crew ready to go and Deion waiting in the Town Car. I introduced myself and realized that he had no idea what was planned for the next six hours.  I stood there looking up at this huge man explaining that he’ll be hitting whiffle balls all over KC and his wife would be cooking and Deion has a lifesize cardboard cutout of himself – and I realized that he’s got to think this little jew boy chattering away must look really funny.

That said he was a gracious host and this was one of the most natural and fun webisodes.

Pujoles really did hit that ball that almost took Deion’s head off.  First time Deion walked out the door. But as usual he never missed a beat.

Who would have thought it would have been so hard to find a chicken coop in Texas? While it seems like everyone has one in their back yard these days finding a old one that wasn’t completely dilapidated was hard. Well that’s what we did find – one totally a mess. But with a few throw pillows and fresh drapes it freshened right up.

Kudos to Patrick Riester who cut the spot (his first nationally aired commercial) and Brandon Thomas for skillfully dropping the city skyline into the last shot seamlessly. See, you didn’t even notice.

Like this episode With Andruw Jones whe he still played with the Braves.  Atlanta Braves = Tomahawk chop. Why don’t we get Deion and Andruw to throw tomahawks?! So, we did.

Then there is the opening. This was always a hurdle. We had to get Deion and the athlete to meet at their crib. It was always awkward and hard to make natural. But this is the absolute best opening of the entire series.

This was the first shoot we did after Andrew took out a deer on his motorcycle. This was the happiest we has ever seen Deion once he laid eyes on “the sweetest Pie I ever had.”

We wanted to duplicate Adam’s Superbowl winning kick in the snow. But there was no snow, so we made some. Lots of fun!

Ahhhh, our first Home Turf. It started with a big challenge and an idea that set the tone for the campaign. So it turns out that David Ortiz is married to a woman from Green Bay Wisconsin. And that’s where he lives in the off season – in a suburb next to a golf course. Nothing special – no retractable roof, no Red Sox shaped hot tub, no diamond encrusted driveway – just a cookie cutter house in nowhere WI. What could we do that was exciting there?

Well he was next to a golf course. So somewhere early on we said why don’t we get him and Deion to hit golf balls with baseball bats? Sure, why the hell not.  It made it through the approval process and not long after we were watching Deion and Big Poppy try to out hit each other. We all had a blast and we found the tone for the campaign.

We has so little clue what we were getting ourselves into we didn’t have an AD on the shoot and Beefy and Adam Schwatrz shared a hotel room.

These were very difficult plays to shoot in. Basically it was just white rooms, low ceilings and computer monitors that we couldn’t show because they were “top secret.” So there was a lot of down time while Andrew was working hard to fill the frame with decent images. During one of these I was talking to one of the students about the power of the satellite images.  I said,  ”Okay, really.  How close up can you see and image from space?” Seconds later our client “The General” was on the set.  Even without the cameras rolling these are NOT the questions you ask.

We felt this was going to be a great spot as soon as we saw the boards. But we were worried about finding the talent. And then Big Mike walking through the door. He is huge, intimidating and vulnerable all at the same time. Little Kassidy proved to have plenty of sass on camera and off. We don’t know why, but we always end up shooting in San Antonio in summer. Clearly we are, as a group, paying for some serious misdeeds from a past life. We shot basic training for the US Air Force a few years ago in San Antonio at the very peak of summer. We had about as much fun as the recruits did. But without all that helpful yelling from the instructors.

So, when we got the call for a substantial doc-style project to be shot in July, we just knew we’d be in San Antonio again. Then we found out we’d be shooting in a coal-fired power plant, no less. Over the course of a week, we shot in a solar array, on the 16th floor (outside) of the actual structure where the coal feeds the ‘fireball’ to make the steam that turns the turbines. It was hot, on top of hot.

Then, there was the coal conveyor belt… CPS has a fleet of coal trains thatbring coal from Wyoming twice a day every day. They dump all this coal on an enormous 43 acre pile. Then it gets fed onto a conveyor belt, and then into the furnace, or Pit of Hell, as we called it. So, of course, that’s where we decided to shoot.

It was hot, it was dark, there was a giant conveyor belt running next to us. We wanted to light the coal. Not an easy shot to make. Nicer couldn’t have been nicer (sorry), so it all turned out great.
Bobby rigging a 1200 PAR before it got dark. The conveyor belt was tricky. We were worried about being fed into the hellish inferno.
Apple boxes are the most useful item in the truck, bar none.

This whole story was a surprise.  When we were tech-scouting the powerplant we visited the train maintenance facility. We learned that CPS owns their own coal cars and maintains them. This provides direct savings to the customers of San Antonio.  It is a perfect example of how CPS ‘works for you.’

We set up a time lapse over the lake just before the sun rose. It was very pretty. CPS does a great job of  maintaining a natural habitat around the plant ( yes, we know, it’s a power plant, but still). The lake had wildlife and was open to the public for fishing, apparently.
Early morning, after a couple of coffees. We were actually agreeing about how a shot should look. Remember this moment.

CPS decided they needed to have an interview with a line repairman, to show how hard these guys work to keep everybody on line.  And so it was that Mike and Andrew found themselves wedged – with a fully-rigged Red Camera and tripod – in a cherry picker , high above the power-lines, interviewing a repairman in another cherry picker. Let’s just say we are lucky to both be relatively svelte of body…it was a little tight up there. Did we mention it was summer? In San Antonio?

As soon as we heard the concept of this campaign, The Walnut Room at the Clarion Hotel came to mind.  This is the badly carpeted, badly lit hotel conference room where casting calls have been taking place in Austin for decades. The second thing that came to mind was to call Rachel Flanagan – the queen of casting.  Once those two pieces were in place we had to decide if we were going to tell the actors what the concept was – that this casting call was going to be the spots – or should we hit them with it while the camera was rolling.

We decided to let them in on the joke once we realized the quality of comedy actors we had coming in. That way they would have a chance to prepare.  And they did.  Wow. This was the loudest, most outrageous, most over the top call we’ve ever been a part of.  And I’m not just saying that because of the old lady who took her top off or the actress who showed up in full mermaid costume.

South Padre is a special little island at the very bottom tip of Texas.  A lot of people are familiar with it because of Spring Break and their famous sand castle competition. But the rest of the year it’s a relaxed, relatively quiet, beach get-away.  It’s the kind of place you can “Be Yourself.”

For this campaign we brought the “Padre” to life in the form of a Hemingwayesque character with a twinkle in his eye.  We also buried a guy up to his neck in the sand, built a giant sandcastle and weathered high winds on the gulf.

Credits go out to the dynamic duo of San Antonio: Dirk and James at The Atkins Group. They were cut quicly by Fast Cuts Dallas.

That’s our buddy Davis Tucker who was buried up to his neck. He’s a favorite actor of ours and not just because he’s an avid cyclist and owns Red’s Porch.  No camera trickery here.  Just a couple of shovels and PA’s to dig a hole.

When you shoot with Beef and Pie, “it always comes together.”  Somehow, someway.  But I have to say this was one where it was looking pretty sketchy even as we were shooting.  A few examples:

1) Just finding this big of a sailboat at this time of year is impossible in Padre, however a local doctor took the day off, grabbed his buddies and met us out on the bay.

2) When our boat arrived at the location where we had scouted there was no sailboat and the storm had turned the water into a murky frappuccino.  Suddenly over the radio we heard the good doctor’s voice telling us where a nice patch of bay was and how to get to him.

3) The Padre’s hero boat was supposed to meet us out there but was taking on water and listing so badly to the port side they had to tow it back to shore.

4) The sun wasn’t listening to us and kept going down.

But in the end it did, somehow, come together.

These are the fun ones.  We got to spend a day in the studio while Craig Finn of The Hold Steady was recording his first solo album.  Then we brought him over to Beefy’s back yard and did one of the nicest interviews of the year.  He was so articulate about his writing process, his reasoning for making a solo album and the amount of trust he had to have with his producer for this project to come to life.

We’ve listened to the album and you should too.  You can get it here.

The shot of the flag waving was the first thing we ever shot on our new Epic Camera from Red.

Craig was recording in the same studio with the same producer who records Spoon.  PS. it’s dump.

The artwork for the cover is an actual flag designed by Christian and sewn by his sister-in-law.  If you are interested in some of the coolest custom flags visit Standard Grit.

This is the first video that we’ve done with Craig but Christian designed The Hold Steady’s last album and Andrew did the cool photography for it.  Check it out here.
