South Padre Island  /  Be Yourself  /  Buried

South Padre is a special little island at the very bottom tip of Texas.  A lot of people are familiar with it because of Spring Break and their famous sand castle competition. But the rest of the year it’s a relaxed, relatively quiet, beach get-away.  It’s the kind of place you can “Be Yourself.”

For this campaign we brought the “Padre” to life in the form of a Hemingwayesque character with a twinkle in his eye.  We also buried a guy up to his neck in the sand, built a giant sandcastle and weathered high winds on the gulf.

Credits go out to the dynamic duo of San Antonio: Dirk and James at The Atkins Group. They were cut quicly by Fast Cuts Dallas.

That’s our buddy Davis Tucker who was buried up to his neck. He’s a favorite actor of ours and not just because he’s an avid cyclist and owns Red’s Porch.  No camera trickery here.  Just a couple of shovels and PA’s to dig a hole.

Can you tell we weathered a windstorm?  It was so bad we had to shut down the production and head in to a bar for the afternoon.  We got some police tape, a 12-pack put the two “Best PA’s in Texas” Matt and Tim on the beach to guard the castle overnight.

Cameo?  Karen.

And how do you keep a giant sandcastle from crumbling in a windstorm overnight? Lots of Elmers Glue.  From a spray bottle…..

Through rain, sleet, ice, wind, and stinging hornets we deliver…
Four hobbits in the castle.  (Please don’t break it there is one shot left.)

When you shoot with Beef and Pie, “it always comes together.”  Somehow, someway.  But I have to say this was one where it was looking pretty sketchy even as we were shooting.  A few examples:

1) Just finding this big of a sailboat at this time of year is impossible in Padre, however a local doctor took the day off, grabbed his buddies and met us out on the bay.

2) When our boat arrived at the location where we had scouted there was no sailboat and the storm had turned the water into a murky frappuccino.  Suddenly over the radio we heard the good doctor’s voice telling us where a nice patch of bay was and how to get to him.

3) The Padre’s hero boat was supposed to meet us out there but was taking on water and listing so badly to the port side they had to tow it back to shore.

4) The sun wasn’t listening to us and kept going down.

But in the end it did, somehow, come together.

Faster! Faster!  Use your hips!
Drivin’ and Smilin’
that’s a wrap!
